Bachelor of Engineering Mechatronics

About Me

Hi, I'm Edward a Bachelor of Engineering Mechatronics student at the University of Newcastle with a lifelong passion for "doing things." For as long as I can remember, I've been busy creating, whether it was nailing two pieces of wood together in my grandad's garage or conducting some crazy experiment (usually involving fire). My desire to make things often stems from the thought, "I could build that" or "I'm not paying for that.", often leading too spending twice as much to achieve half the project.

Like most makers, I have a heap of projects that started as awesome ideas or concepts that may never be fully completed. But I believe the real value in making comes from the skills I've picked up trying new ideas. Every unfinished project has taught me something invaluable, whether it’s a new technique or a lesson in perseverance.

When I'm not studying or working on projects, you can find me enjoying the outdoors, camping, hiking, and exploring new trails. I also love hanging out with friends, sharing laughs, and immersing myself in the latest PC games. These activities provide a balance in my life and often inspire my innovative thinking and drive for excellence.

I'm known for being hardworking and for my attention to detail and my ability to think creatively to solve complex problems. Whether it’s through coursework or personal projects, I strive to apply my knowledge and skills in exciting and different ways.

CAD

Since starting with Autodesk Inventor in 2015, I have developed my skills in designing and manufacturing using a variety of CAD packages, including:

  • Autodesk Inventor and Fusion 360
  • Autodesk AutoCAD
  • Onshape
  • Creo

3D Printing and CNC

My passion for DIY and creating things has introduced me to various rapid prototyping techniques, such as:

  • 3D Printing
  • Laser Cutting
  • CNC Routing

Through hands-on experience with these processes, I have gained valuable knowledge about designing for manufacturing.

Projects

  • Fully 3D Printed Rocket
  • Filament Storage

Electronics

Circuit and PCB Design

Through various university courses and projects, I have gained skills in designing simple circuits and converting them to PCBs for final projects. Tools I have used include:

  • Autodesk Eagle and Fusion 360
  • Kicad
  • EasyEDA

Microcontrollers

I have experience with a variety of microcontrollers, including:

  • Arduino
  • ESP
  • STM
  • Raspberry Pi
  • RP2040

Using these microcontrollers in various projects, I have gained valuable knowledge about designing for manufacturing.

Python

Through various projects, both academic and personal, I have gained experience with a wide variety of Python packages and libraries, including:

  • OpenCV
  • PyTorch
  • Pandas
  • NumPy

Projects I have completed in Python include:

  • PyTorch – Shape Recognition Neural Networks
  • OpenCV – Face Recognition and Character Recognition
  • Pygame/Keras – AI Snake following a tutorial

C/C++

My experience with C coding is primarily through the Arduino IDE, which I have used for various projects. Additionally, I have encountered C in other coding environments:

  • Arduino
  • STM Embedded Systems
  • CMake

I have also worked with C++ through the Unity game engine.

Projects

Project 1 Image

Balancing Robot

For my university project, I developed a two-wheeled robot capable of driving and steering while maintaining balance. Through this project, I gained valuable skills in PCB making, part selection, and system identification.

Project 2 Image

Rocket Roll Controlled Camera System

As part of my final year project, I created a camera system with active roll stabilization for a high-powered rocket. I learned CAD, electronics, and sensor filtering using IMUs, which were crucial for the system's stability and performance.

Project 3 Image

Fully 3D Printed Rocket

I designed a small rocket for 18mm motors that can be fully 3D printed in under 2 hours. This project enhanced my CAD skills and taught me about designing for 3D printing, particularly regarding tolerances.
